Brian Murphy paints self-portraits from direct observation inspired by common, everyday moments. His watercolor surfaces suggest a watery reflection of self through a pooling of color. Using a hand-held mirror, the artist paints in real time in a specific physical place, and searches for identity through relationship of artist and model. Ultimately, Murphy seeks to find meaning in life by painting himself into it. Here Murphy expands his familiarly scaled imagery with opposing panels that present “self-portrait” heads, cropped from reflection at the mouth, and peering up from the bottom edges of each painting in much the same manner as one views a ceiling fresco from far below.
