The Seattle Floor is the fourth variation on a project begun in 2010 and is based on the idea that there are “rules of the game” implicitly present in any artistic production. With The Seattle Floor, viewers are presented with a structure that has defined limits as well as a range of choices and possibilities. As in any game, the rules are set, but the choices made by those who play are not prescribed.
Each person has a body that is anchored in physical reality. As long as a person is on earth, the laws of gravity are operational and, with very few exceptions, movements are made by walking on the ground. The game rules, therefore, generate the domain of possibilities, while unwritten, are defined by the material structure of the installation. The game rules form the floor upon which the visitor may walk.
The artist’s reception was held on Friday, August 28, from 5 to 7pm, and Stratmann offered a presentation of his work the following day, on Saturday, August 29, 2015, at noon.
